Social media outage: Facebook, Instagram down for six hours

Like most businesses, many business owners and online content creators rely on sites like Facebook and Instagram to run their businesses and connect with their customers.

Manager for a local country music artist (in Clovis) and line dance teacher, Tammy Velasquez described it as a big headache.

With Facebook and Instagram down, it affected both of her jobs.

“I was incredibly pissed off. I was just like, what’s going on in the world? And we couldn’t see half of our page because it just wasn’t showing, ”Velasquez said.

Social media coordinator for the Clovis Police Department, Ty Wood said this was a slight inconvenience for someone in their position, but not for the department as a whole.

“Regarding Facebook and Instagram, yes, it was impacted on Monday during the blackout. Our post for the #PinkPatchProject had to wait for Instagram to return and we were unable to send or receive messages on those platforms, ”said Wood. “During the outage, we relied on our other platforms and electronic communications media such as our website, Twitter and Nextdoor. “

The outage not only affected business pages and users, it also affected Facebook’s internal systems – employees were unable to access emails or open office doors with key cards.

The company issued a statement apologizing for the outage, it said there was no hack or attempt to access user data.

Facebook Vice President of Infrastructure Santosh Janardhan said in a blog post on Monday, “To all the people and businesses around the world who depend on us, we are sorry for the inconvenience caused by the outage. today on our platforms. ”

So the question is why? Why did it go on for six hours in a row?

According to Janardhan, the outrage was sparked by “configuration changes on the backbone routers.”

However, the vice president of Facebook did not specify what the changes were.

Janardhan added, “This disruption in network traffic has had a cascading effect on the way our data centers communicate, shutting down our services. “

As for the Facebook stock, it fell 4.9% with widespread outrage.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg even posted a statement on his Facebook page:

“Sorry for the disruption today – I know how much you rely on our services to stay in touch with the people you care about.”
