Can Meta stop copying and pasting Instagram features on Whatsapp?

You know how one person does the group project and everyone just copies it? Instagram engineers must feel the same way.

Every time Whatsapp introduces a new feature, we end up saying, “Oh, that’s how we used to do Instagram/Facebook”. It seems that these Meta-owned platforms quite often use Ctrl+C followed by Ctrl+V.

Whatsapp is a messaging application used for business and personal purposes, but now it has become Instagram or Facebook. Whatsapp was a messaging app and it should have stayed the same.

Today Whatsapp is used for anything and everything other than just messaging. We see parents parents wedding photos, new phone bought by grocer uncle and so on on whatsapp status.

In 2016, “stories” (a Snapchat clone) were introduced to Instagram. Then the stories were copied and pasted on Whatsapp as “status” in 2017. As a result, the photos we have already seen on Instagram feed, Instagram stories, Facebook and Snapchat are now visible again on the status WhatsApp.

As this cut-and-paste game continues at Meta HQ, we see some not-so-new updates on Whatsapp. Some of them are lifesavers like deleting messages. But others have made it difficult to distinguish between Whatsapp and Instagram. Over time, all Meta apps, especially Instagram and Whatsapp, have started to look similar and provide the same user experience.

But we don’t want this to happen more often in the future. Therefore, here is a list of Instagram features that were not required on Whatsapp and others that should be kept thousands of miles away from Whatsapp.

1. Reactions to messages

Users are not really happy with this recently introduced Instagram feature on Whatsapp. You can now react to messages on Whatsapp like on Instagram. In addition, you can react to your own messages. (Are you laughing at your own jokes? If so, you know something is wrong)

On Instagram, we share posts, memes, and stories in chat with other users. A reaction button makes sense there. But on a messaging app, that’s not the case. Looks like the dev team just wanted to complete the mission anyway.

Since we now have this feature on Whatsapp, at least allow us to choose the reactions.

2. Reels

One feature no one on this entire planet ever wants on Whatsapp is reels.

The reels on Instagram have been squeaky anyway. On top of that, YouTube and Snapchat also have short video formats now, like bad TikTok clones (if that was even possible).

Please, please never submit any reels to Whatsapp.

If this happens, we immediately need a new messaging platform.

3. Ability to Like Stories

Imagine uncles, aunts, parents of parents, your sabzi walaten-year-old school friends and others on your contact list reacting to your status.

This will lead to so much confusion and unnecessary and backup messages.

Therefore, let these developers know in advance: if this feature is in your KRA for the next month, remove it as soon as possible.

4. Display a single image

Instagram lets you share one view, two views, and keep image sharing options in chat (copied from Snapchat, again).

On Whatsapp, we used to directly share images that are saved in our gallery. But some time ago Whatsapp introduced single view image option in chat. Again I would ask, why?

First of all, we don’t require single view images on a messaging app. Also, this feature is useless because you don’t get a notification if the other person takes a screenshot and then it stays in their gallery.

And last but not least…

5. Stories

Stories, known as status on Whatsapp, robbed him of his main purpose. Which FYI sends messages to people.

Remember, how we knew life updates from our friends and family on Facebook earlier? Now you see them on Whatsapp status (also).

Photos on Instagram are also everywhere in Whatsapp status now.

Moreover, birthday wishes via personal messages have also been replaced by Whatsapp status.

So even if you don’t want to see what people are up to these days, Whatsapp Status will force you to. Many also end up sharing their entire photo gallery on Whatsapp status.

Then there are those who use the app less for messaging (which is what it is intended for) and all that random Whatsapp status stuff.

Which of these features would you never want on Whatsapp?
